The Mu Guang exhibition officially opened at the Zhongli Art Museum on October 9. During the setup, I truly felt the growth and progress of our members. Many of them have also won awards in various competitions. Over the years, Mu Guang has developed significantly—both in terms of exposure in the art community and the quality of our members’ works. I hope everyone continues to work hard, because opportunities always come to those who are prepared.

Muguang: A Collective Journey

When visitors read the introduction to Muguang at the exhibition, perhaps some of them felt a sense of resonance. What began with just five people who loved sketching outdoors has now grown into a group of thirty-nine. Ironically, while our numbers have increased, fewer members continue to focus on sketching, and more are drawn to competitions and awards. This is not necessarily a bad thing—perhaps it simply reflects how we have all grown in different directions.

In the early days, when our membership was small and my own workload was heavy, Vice President Cai Cai-zi took responsibility for organizing sketching activities. He was deeply committed and contributed enormously to Muguang. Later, he left because of differences in vision, but I have always remembered his words: “Even if our ideals do not align, we both want what is best for Muguang.”

There was a time when I struggled with recruiting new members, which forced me to reflect: what makes Muguang different from other art associations? If we only hold an annual exhibition and one general meeting, there are many older, more resourceful organizations that already do so. I began to consider a different path—how to bring together those who share the same ideals, so that we could form a true collective force.

In pursuit of this, I observed other associations, attended countless openings, and engaged widely—not only to learn, but also, unexpectedly, to increase visibility for myself and for Muguang. Over time, our reputation grew, and many expressed interest in joining. Yet I chose carefully, focusing on those who were willing to contribute, especially younger members. To build a strong organization requires a team, and with a team comes many responsibilities. I was fortunate: gradually, some members stepped forward to help, while those unwilling to contribute—those who sought only recognition or gain—eventually left.

There were also voices of doubt: that Muguang’s success relied on southern mentors, that we borrowed others’ prestige, or that I sought fame for myself by taking credit for everyone’s efforts. Such words angered me deeply. From the beginning, I envisioned Muguang as a collective endeavor. The age of fighting alone has passed; today, strength comes from unity. Yet it is rare to find people who truly share your ideals and are willing to strive alongside you.

From Teacher Ma Fang-yu, I learned the principle of acting for the benefit of others—a philosophy that echoes the spirit of Teacher Ho Chao-chu, who selflessly shared his knowledge with anyone. Guided by this, I embraced social media and established the Muguang website to create visibility for our members. Slowly but surely, this began to bear fruit.

In recent years, with Alice serving as Secretary-General and several members stepping forward to assist, my own workload has eased. At this stage, I realized that improving by sixty percent is easy, but to progress beyond that requires far greater effort and wisdom.

This morning, as our association gathered works for the exhibition, I used the waiting time to reflect. To nurture an individual is never easy; to build a strong collective is even harder. But only when each of us sets aside personal ambition can we come together to achieve something truly great.

Time flies—Muguang is now entering its 14th year. We started as a small art group of just five people, and now we have grown to 39 members. From having no formal organization to everyone now working according to the organizational bylaws; from one person shouldering most of the responsibilities to many gradually stepping up to help—so many years have passed.

This time’s board and supervisory meeting was filled with lively discussion, which I felt was very different from before. Everyone was more willing and courageous to speak up and share their opinions. This reflects the long-standing spirit of mutual respect among Muguang’s members.

I am especially grateful to Teacher Jian Jun-Hui, who, when encouraging me to start this art group, offered advice without overly interfering in the operations. That is why Muguang has maintained a practice where major decisions are made through board or member votes, while only smaller matters are handled by the president.

We’ve gradually set the organization on a proper course. Over the next two years, I will begin to step back and let it operate more freely. I look forward to seeing a new generation join Muguang, paving new and unique paths. Let’s all keep up the great work!

For us, this is a once-a-year event, but for them, they long for this to be a part of their everyday life. Regardless of the reasons that brought them to live in a nursing home—be it personal circumstances or changes in Taiwanese society—we must helplessly accept this reality. But still, we should do something for them, because we will all grow old one day.

Currently, Hui Chuan Nursing Home primarily cares for elderly residents with mild to moderate conditions. My father, on the other hand, used to stay in a respiratory intensive care facility. Every time I visited him, the air felt completely different—very heavy and silent. The staff told me I was the family member who visited most frequently. Even though most of the elderly lying in those beds were unable to care for themselves, I truly believe they were fully conscious and deeply longed for their loved ones to be by their side.

Last year, we organized a Mother’s Day event at Hui Chuan Nursing Home. This year, at Ying-Ru’s invitation, we did it again. With more experience this time, the event was even better organized. We hope to offer a small gesture of care to make things just a little more beautiful.

Thank you to Ying-Ru for arranging everything, to Ya-Ching for sponsoring the fresh flowers and cake, and to Yu-Fen from Tuesday Sketch Group for donating two watermelons and some tomatoes, as well as to all the passionate friends who participated! Much gratitude to you all.

“Tuesday Sketching Fun” was the predecessor of the Muk Kuang Painting Society. Back then, it was just five of us—Tsai Yu-Ju, Tan Ba-Chin, Lee Jen-Chieh, Ko Ching-Hsia, and myself—going out to sketch every Tuesday. Over time, this small tradition grew into a formal painting group. Eventually, only Ba-Chin, Ching-Hsia, and I remained active in the society, and just Ba-Chin and I continued the weekly sketching.

Over the years, many have come and gone from our Tuesday sketch sessions. What once felt difficult to let go of has now become something I’ve grown accustomed to.

Recently, a group of friends from Yuanlin, Changhua, joined us. They carry the same passion for sketching that we once had in our early days. Seeing them reminds me of the times we traveled far and wide together, supporting one another without calculation, simply for the love of painting.

A strong group is built on mutual trust and helping each other. If rumors, gossip, and blame-shifting start to creep in, it becomes hard for a group to stay focused or accomplish anything meaningful. Thankfully, that kind of atmosphere is rare in Muguang and our Tuesday gatherings.

There have been times when I was so busy I thought about ending our Tuesday sketching sessions, but every time we voted on it, everyone agreed it would be a shame to stop—so we continued. Now, with new friends joining from other art groups, that spark has been reignited.

Sketching is truly a powerful training ground for painting. I hope everyone continues to hold on to this practice and keeps the spirit alive.

The Muguang exhibition at the Hsinchu County Art Museum in February came about when we were searching for a venue and saw a photo of Teacher He’s artwork at the museum. At that moment, I immediately decided to apply for an exhibition there. On the opening day, we invited Teacher He’s son, Brother He, to attend the event at the Hsinchu County Art Museum. Director Zhu Shumin of the Hsinchu County Cultural Affairs Bureau also made a special effort to attend and announced that Hsinchu would be establishing a new art museum, which would include two of Teacher He’s works in its collection.

Everything was arranged in the best possible way. Teacher He had always been a strong supporter of Muguang, and through these connections, Muguang has been able to bring his works to various cities in Taiwan, allowing local communities to appreciate the masterpieces of a great artist.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Brother He, Second Brother, Elder Sister, and Second Sister for their continuous support of Muguang’s exhibitions by providing Teacher He’s artworks each time. Thank you!

The Muguang Painting Association exhibition at the Hsinchu County Art Museum had its opening ceremony yesterday. Since the venue was quite far, those who attended included Mr. Ho Zhaoyu’s eldest and second sons, Professor Hu Dahua, Professor Zheng Fucheng and his wife, Chairman Wu Qinghou of Biluo Art Gallery and his wife, as well as the handsome and beautiful members of Muguang.

This time, the exhibition space was truly exceptional and received high praise from everyone. The layout allowed for wider spacing between the artworks, eliminating any sense of crowding and enabling a more relaxed appreciation of each piece. This was the most enjoyable and fulfilling time I’ve ever had because more members were willing to step up and help with Muguang’s affairs.

Secretary General Alice Kunmei, Deputy Secretaries Baoling and Kaili dedicated themselves to updating the exhibition webpage, learning and working tirelessly. Kat Rufen, while helping with the setup, noticed that adding posters to the walls could make the exhibition more eye-catching. He swiftly designed and completed the promotional materials within just a few days, while Dagong and Shixun assisted in putting up the posters.

Our Treasurer took the time to handle payment requests and even made time to attend. Qizhen was devoted to capturing wonderful moments with her photography, while Yiming traveled all the way from Kaohsiung, and Xingwen and Dalin came from Yilan. Despite her busy schedule, Haoqing also made the effort to attend. We were also grateful to have the presence of Principal Zixin and Lijuan, who have always supported Muguang’s exhibitions.

I once asked some senior artists how to improve interpersonal relationships, and their advice was: As long as you are doing something good and heading in the right direction, just keep going without complaints. Over time, like-minded people will naturally come together, while those of different values will gradually drift away.

I now truly understand this. The virtuous cycle within Muguang has already begun, and it will expand exponentially. We are only going to get better—of this, I am absolutely certain.

Let’s move forward together and “Turn the corner and meet the light!”

The year 2025 marks a new chapter for Muguang, as we step into our second term. With everyone’s support and trust, I have been re-elected as the chairperson for the second term. Following our previous plans, Muguang will continue hosting exhibitions at art museums across Taiwan.

Our previous exhibition application at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall was made to ensure that Teacher He Zhaoqiu could attend and visit. This time, our exhibition at the Hsinchu County Art Museum is dedicated to commemorating Teacher He Zhaoqiu, as Hsinchu is his hometown.

Although Muguang’s current resources are limited, this is what we can do for now. That said, with the talent and dedication of Muguang’s members, I firmly believe that we have great potential for the future. We also look forward to welcoming heroes and enthusiasts from all walks of life to visit, exchange ideas, and appreciate the art.

See you on February 15th at 2 PM!

Yesterday marked the end of our art association’s exhibition period at the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery. Everyone had worked hard to prepare for it, from the painstaking setup to yesterday’s hurried dismantling and retrieving of artworks to take home. Sometimes, I wonder: what is it all for? Some do it for interest, some aspire to become artists, while others simply enjoy the sense of participation that comes from being part of a group.

No matter the reason, becoming an artist is truly a challenging journey. It requires continuous creation, constant pursuit of excellence, and enduring the pressure of having no stable income. Yet many people embrace it wholeheartedly.

During the exhibition, one member asked me why our association doesn’t have a unified artistic style. I believe that an art association should maintain a central focus—like Muguang, which primarily emphasizes Western art. However, with so many members, it’s natural for artistic styles to vary. It’s impossible to require all members to create similar works, as that would strip away the true essence of creativity. The primary purpose of a joint exhibition is to showcase the results of everyone’s hard work over the past year, foster exchange, and learn from each other’s strengths.

I’ve watched Muguang grow over the years, and I’m proud that our members’ works have reached a consistently high standard. As a result, we’ve progressed from exhibiting in cultural centers to being featured in art galleries. We’ve successfully completed this year’s objectives, and up next is our annual general meeting. This year marks the association’s 10th anniversary and the third year since its official registration. We’ll also be electing a new chairperson. I look forward to the emergence of a new leader to guide us toward even greater heights.
